What this looks like in practice (KS3)
The Aptitude in Subject captures where your child currently is on their learning journey in each subject they study. Each term your child will be presented with new knowledge and skills that they will have to become proficient in; sometimes they will be successful and grasp these concepts and ideas with relative ease, at other times it will be more challenging and they will not be successful straight away and further work and study will be required. This is a perfectly normal part of the learning journey and we ask you and your child to embrace this. We encourage you to discuss with your child about how they have performed in each subject area and to encourage them to reflect on their successes but also their areas for development.
In the example above the student has been placed in the Intermediate Pathway for both Maths and English. In Maths his/her aptitude this term has been graded as ‘below’ meaning that there will be aspects of the work in Maths that he/she has not yet grasped at a level that can be expected. Meanwhile his/her attitude to learning and behaviour in Maths are both good which suggests that in spite of finding the work challenging this term he/she has continued to work hard. This positive attitude will be crucial in helping him/her to overcome the challenges in Maths. In English the student is clearly working very strongly within the Pathway and both their Behaviour and Attitude to Learning has been graded excellent.
If parents want to give their children a gift, the best thing they can do is to teach their children to love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort, and keep on learning.
