Aims:

PSHE education is a subject through which students develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain. It helps students to understand the world they live in and how they can contribute positively to it.

At Fred Longworth we focus on the development of skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, team-working and critical thinking. Our overall aim is to ensure that students are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.

Topics cover three core themes:

  1. Health and wellbeing
  2. Relationships
  3. Living in the wider world (including economic wellbeing and aspects of careers education)

PSHE can help to tackle barriers to learning, raises aspirations, and helps to improve the life chances of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged students.

Organisation:

At Fred Longworth the PSHE curriculum is delivered through specific breakout days where the whole school engages in PSHE teaching and learning for the full day. These days allow for a real depth of understanding to be developed.

There are also learning opportunities in other curriculum subjects (PSHE education provision integrated within other subjects) and learning through involvement in the life of the school and wider community (such as careers lesson, charity events, road safety, healthy eating and physical exercise).
