Explore what it means to be Muslim. Practises and beliefs
of the religion. How does being a Muslim in a non-Islamic society compare to
the experience of living in a Muslim country?

Belonging to Judaism

Explore what it means to be Jewish. Compare and contrast the beliefs and practises of Secular, Reform and Orthodox Jewish communities.

Belonging to Eastern religions

Study beliefs and practises of Sikhism. Students relate
experiences of being a Sikh to their own life. The history of Sikhism

Year 8

 

Religion, morality and ethics

What is morality and how does religion inform the morality of believers how does this compare with secular beliefs? A study of the theological arguments for and against the existence of God? Does the presence
of evil in our world mean that God cannot not exist?

Was Jesus just an ordinary man?

Understand key events in the life of Jesus. Widen knowledge and deepen understanding of Jesus. Appreciate Jesus as both
historical and religious figure.

Belonging to Christianity

To explore Christian worship. Understand how Christians
put faith into action. Understand the Christian idea of God. Consider moral
issues and the Christian response to them.

Year 9

GCSE option

Religion, peace and conflict

Considering the causes of war. The Just War Theory and ethical issues surrounding nuclear weapons. What is pacifism and can it work? Why do we have violent protest and terrorism?

Religion, crime and punishment

Why do people commit crimes? How should criminals be punished and what is the religious opinion of this? What do Christians think about the death penalty?

Relationships and families

Relationships before and outside of marriage. Same sex marriage. What is the Christian teaching on the use of contraception? Divorce
as a moral issue. The 21st century family and attitudes to gender equality.

Human Rights and Social Justice

How do prejudice and discrimination affect society? How can people make society just? Why is religious freedom important? The role of charity within social justice.

 

Christianity: Practises

How do Christians worship God and what special services and celebrations exist? What is the role of the Christian Church in the wider
community? How does the Church respond to world poverty and put beliefs into
practise.

Christianity: Beliefs and teachings

Is God all powerful and omnipotent? What is the idea of God for Christians including the Trinity. The concepts of heaven and hell,
sin and the ability to be forgiven. The ministry of Jesus and the impact of
his teachings on the lives of Christians.

Islam: Practises

The concept of pillars in Sunni Islam. The Ten Obligatory Acts of Shi’a Islam. The role and significance of fasting during the month of Ramadan including: origins; duties; benefits of fasting; the exceptions and their reasons.

Islam: Beliefs and teachings

Tawhid and authority of the holy books; prophets of God;
Day of Judgment; the supremacy of Allah. Omnipotence, mercy, fairness and justice including different ideas about Allah’s relationship with the world.
