Message from the Headteacher
Dear Parents & Carers,
This week has been an exceptional week in school and has seen Freddie’s at its very best. The Remembrance Concert on Monday, plus the various other contributions made by our school community throughout this Season of Remembrance, have made this a very special time in school. Whilst full credit must be given to the students involved, these events have had a positive ripple effect throughout the whole school community. The respectful behaviour and reverence shown by all of our students during the Act of Remembrance on Monday was incredible to experience.
It was an honour and privilege to be joined at Monday’s concert by the Lord-Lieutenant, the King’s representative in Greater Manchester; members of the Tyldesley Branch of the Royal Bristish Legion; Local councillors and veterans from the armed service. All were deeply moved and impressed with our school and its commitment to the importance of remembrance. We even got a special mention on the BBC news!
We hope Year 11 parents who attended Wednesday’s core exam evening found this event useful in helping you and your child prepare for the up-and-coming exams.
And finally, the icing on the cake during this week was of course the 60th Anniversary Concert which took place on Thursday night, slightly delayed from last term but which nevertheless showcased the musical talent within our incredible school. Here’s to the next 60 years Freddie’s!
A huge thank-you must go out to all of our staff whose continued dedication and commitment to the young people of this area make all of these events possible.
Fabulous!
Thank-you for your continued support.
Mr Davies.

Things to celebrate
- Last Sunday our school took part in the Tyldesley Remembrance Parade. It was wonderful to see so many of our students taking part in this community event.
- On Monday we hosted a very special Concert of Remembrance for veterans and were delighted that the Lord Lieutenant of Manchester joined us.
- On Wednesday a number of our students who are involved in the ‘Speak Up’ project visited the Lowry Theatre in Manchester to see a performance of ‘Wonder Boy’.
- On Wednesday evening we held our Year 11 core examination support event for students and parents. We were delighted at the number of people who attended.
- On Thursday some of our Maths students who are studying Advanced Maths & Economics attended Leigh College to celebrate Maths Week England 2024.
- On Thursday our Music Department also hosted a ‘Freddie’s Eras concert’ to mark our 60th anniversary. This was another stunning event involving so many of our students and staff.

Former students Rugby success
Ex GCSE PE students and brothers Harry & Josh Peacock have recently represented that same rugby team in the Royal Air Force U23’s championships. They are both playing at a high standard and it's great to see them both enjoying playing competitive Rugby together, on the same team and in different places around the world.
-
Young Shot star
Every Saturday between September and January, Jessica Bailey (Year 7) volunteers on a game shoot in Astley. She has really taken to it and it’s great to see her enjoy the outdoors, in all weathers. She has recently featured in the BASC (British Association for Shooting and Conservation) magazine in the Young Shots gallery.
We are always excited to learn of any sporting successes outside of school so we can celebrate the student’s achievements. Please can parents email Mr Gregory with any information so we can share with everyone on Freddie’s Focus – gregoryi@flhs.wigan.sch.uk

Homework and Independent Learning
Helping your child to understand how we learn:
Retrieval practice is the strategy of recalling facts, concepts, or events from memory in order to enhance learning. The act of retrieving something from your memory actually strengthens the connections holding it there, making it more likely that you’ll be able to recall it in the future. Below are some of the strategies that we have spoken to your children about:
Our Working Memory can only hold a few pieces of information for up to 30 seconds until it is lost/forgotten. This is why we have to do something with that information to make sure that it is not lost.
Actively engaging with information and tasks which involve retrieval and repetition help information stick.
Applications that we use for learning
The following applications are used by our students during their time at FLHS to aid their learning. You can learn more about them below.
Microsoft Office
Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.
Satchel:One
Satchel:One is the school online learning platform for students and is the parental portal for all information related to your child’s overall progress within school. You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.
GCSEPod
GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.
Homework Club
Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday-Thursday in the Library (apart from Monday week B) where support and IT equipment is is available.
Attendance
We want to do all we can to support your child to be in school every day and ask that you support this important message from home, encouraging your child to avoid missing curriculum content through absence. Here is a breakdown of the absences for the following attendance percentages:
Thank you for your continued support with attendance.
Belonging, Engaging, Succeeding Together.
Can we please remind all our parents and carers to use the correct channels of communication should they wish to raise a concern or question. You continued support is invaluable to us.
