Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents & Carers,
Welcome back and to Term 6. We have had a positive start to the new half term, and we appreciate your support. Year 11 continue with their GCSEs but also all of our Year 10 will be starting their first series of mock examinations next week. Whilst the Sports Hall is set up for the GCSEs, we take the opportunity to schedule as many Year 10 exams as possible in this space to ensure that Year 10 gain as much experience as possible in a formal examination setting. Once the exam period is over, we will report to parents Year 10 examination results. Students have been told what to prepare for these exams and should be revising. This is a significant step in their journey towards taking their final exams and will provide a valuable learning opportunity for the students.
At the start of the new term, we cannot stress enough the importance of good attendance to school and ultimately, the impact that this will have on final outcomes. Students with low and erratic attendance fall into a vicious cycle, they lose continuity in their lessons and fall behind with critical content. Whilst I have shared this table before, I think it serves as a useful reminder of the importance of good attendance. It compares the results of two different Year 11 students
Thank-you for your continued support.
Mr Davies.

Things to celebrate
- On Tuesday we welcomed some of our ‘soon to be’ Year 7 students into school for a taster day. It was lovely to meet some of our students, and we look forward to seeing you all again soon.
- Before we broke up, four students from every Form received a BEST Award. This is because they have demonstrated one or more of our character values. We do this to highlight the importance of good character and to make sure that our students know that their positive contribution to our school is valued.
- This week our Year 10 students have visited the Peak District as part of their GCSE Geography course. We are as usual very proud of the way in which our students conducted themselves during this visit.
- Our first meeting for the school show ‘Oliver’ took place this week for any students who are interested in taking part in the school show, which will take place during the next academic year. An overwhelming number of students attended this meeting to show their interest.

What we do at Freddie's and why we do it
Personal Development:
The Department for Education specify that it is your child’s entitlement to a Personal Development education. The aim is to “promote discussion, challenge misconceptions and allow students to reflect on matters that are usually outside a typical lesson.” We therefore build our PD curriculum into our timetable once per fortnight. The same lesson is not missed each week as we carefully map out the lessons over a rolling programme. During these lessons, your child is taught their PD curriculum by their form tutor or a member of staff attached to their year group. Our expectation is that these lessons are treated in the same way as all other lessons, and we hope students find them informative and interesting.
At Freddie’s, celebration, praise and reward are at the heart of all that we do. We want all of our students to strive for excellence.

Homework and Independent Learning
The diagram below demonstrates the fact to learn means to remember. Remembering means that information is embedded into the long-term memory.

Our working memory can only hold a few pieces of information for up to 30 seconds until it is lost/forgotten. This is why we have to do something with that information to make sure it is not lost. Actively engaging with information and tasks which involve retrieval and repetition help information stick.
Applications that we use for learning
The following applications are used by our students during their time at FLHS to aid their learning. You can learn more about them below.
Microsoft Office
Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.

Satchel:One
Satchel:One is the school online learning platform for students and is the parental portal for all information related to your child’s overall progress within school. You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.

GCSEPod
GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.

Homework Club
Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday to Thursday where they can complete work in a quiet environment with staff on hand to support them, and computers for online quizzes and research.
Attendance
We want to do all we can to support your child to be in school every day and ask that you support this important message from home, encouraging your child to avoid missing curriculum content through absence. Here is a breakdown of the absences for the following attendance percentages:
