Message from the Headteacher
Dear Parents & Carers,
Thank-you for all your contributions so far to the Christmas hamper appeal. All gratefully received.
I would also like to comment on the positive effort that Year 11 have been demonstrating during the mock examinations. They have risen to the challenge. This process will be a significant learning point for them in their preparations for the final exams in the summer.
As we approach the final weeks of this term, please ensure your child is arriving promptly to school each morning to avoid lates detentions, and that they are fully equipped for school and in the correct uniform.
Thank-you for your continued support.
Mr Davies.

Things to celebrate
- Over the weekend our Brass Band and Take Note Choir played at the Tyldesley Makers Market at St George’s Church.
- This week our Year 11 students have completed their first set of mock examinations. We are delighted with their maturity and the way in which they have conducted themselves during the week.
- Earlier in the week a group of our Spanish students attended a Spanish study day at Home Theatre in Manchester. This provided a superb opportunity for our linguists to develop their skills.
- Our library is always a hive of activity with lots of activities organised by our Library manager Mrs Hibbert. This week was quiz time which involved four of our faculties.
- We have been incredibly impressed with the number of students who are already taking part in our extra-curricular activities. There is so much on offer at Freddie’s. Please encourage your child to get involved.
- Our Year 11 football team secured a place in the Wigan final by beating St Peter’s on penalties on Wednesday evening.
- Sporting Success this week
Watch the moment the Year 11 football team reach the Wigan Schools Cup final.

Wigan Schools Cup Finalists
The Year 11 football team beat St Peter’s on penalties in the Wigan Schools Cup semi-final this week. That means its back-to-back finals for the boys which is an incredible achievement. The final will be played next Tuesday 10th December at Laithwaite Park, Wigan. Kick off time is 4.30pm. Please feel free to come along and support the team.
-
Year 7 Football
The Year 7 boys footballers played against St. Mary's this week in a friendly fixture. The boys did a great job representing the school team and they enjoyed the experience of playing competitive football against another school for the first time. Well done to everyone involved.
-
Cross Country
A special mention goes to all students who have completed their first X-Country run this week. This sporting event demonstrates the importance of students pushing themselves and really challenging their ability to run continuously for a prolonged period and more importantly a true test of character. It is true what they say, you do feel great after really pushing yourself after exercise and students have been surprised by their achievements and accomplishments this week.
-
Former Student Joins Academy
Congratulations to former Sports Student and a past ‘Keely Hodgkinson’ sports awards winner Alisha Lawrence, who has just signed an academy contract for Wigan Warriors Rugby Team. This is something Alisha always aspired to be, a professional rugby player whilst she was at school and we are very proud of her achievements. We can’t wait to see you play.
-
Former Student Is Sporting Hero
Congratulations to former student Emily Burgess, who has been named as ‘Sporting Hero’ in the Cycle UK 100 Women in Cycling list 2024. Emily rides for Astley & Tyldesley Cycling Club and has picked up numerous National, European and World titles.
We are always excited to learn of any sporting successes outside of school so we can celebrate the student’s achievements. Please can parents email Mr Gregory with any information so we can share with everyone on Freddie’s Focus – gregoryi@flhs.wigan.sch.uk

What we do at Freddie's and why we do it
Student-Self Evaluation week:
Over the course of the academic Year, we provide an opportunity for our students to reflect on their learning, achievements, and areas for improvement. This is called our ‘Self-Evaluation’, and it takes place during Form time in the week commencing 9th December. We want all of our students to take ownership of their learning journey and to be able to reflect on what is going well and their next steps. We also ask students to consider any pieces of work that they are most proud of in preparation for their end of Year ‘Student-Led Conference’. Please discuss the importance of this week with your child.

Homework and Independent Learning
The OSCAR model is something that we are promoting at Freddie’s in order to support your child with independent/self-directed study at home.
The ‘S’ stands for select. To support your child with this, the following questions and prompts may be useful:
- Have you checked ‘Satchel One’ to see what you have been set and what your priority is?
- Which subject/piece of homework are you going to focus on tonight?
- Which key pieces of knowledge will you focus on?
- If this is self-directed study, why don’t you focus on subjects or topics that you have forgotten or are likely to forget?
Applications that we use for learning
The following applications are used by our students during their time at FLHS to aid their learning. You can learn more about them below.
Microsoft Office
Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.
Satchel:One
Satchel:One is the school online learning platform for students and is the parental portal for all information related to your child’s overall progress within school. You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.
GCSEPod
GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.
Homework Club
Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday-Thursday in the Library (apart from Monday week B) where support and IT equipment is is available.
Attendance
We want to do all we can to support your child to be in school every day and ask that you support this important message from home, encouraging your child to avoid missing curriculum content through absence. Here is a breakdown of the absences for the following attendance percentages:
Thank you for your continued support with attendance.
Belonging, Engaging, Succeeding Together.
Can we please remind all our parents and carers to use the correct channels of communication should they wish to raise a concern or question. You continued support is invaluable to us.
