Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents & Carers,
I write to you this week as the very proud headteacher of Fred Longworth High School. On Tuesday 6th May two external visitors came into school to review our Personal Development provision and curriculum, including extra curricular provision. During the course of the day, they visited tutor groups during form time; they met with curriculum leaders; student representatives from across all year groups; they observed extra curricular clubs in action at lunchtime and after school and they observed Personal Development lessons, normal lessons and students during social time. The visitors judged our professional development provision to be an absolute strength of our school. They visit many schools and were completely blown away by the level of provision on offer in our setting, which they described as making us a very ‘special’ and ‘unique’ school. The atmosphere around school was incredibly positive and the students were an absolute credit to themselves. Freddie’s is a truly comprehensive school, and proudly so, and to have external visitors come in to see us in action and to make comments of this nature make us all feel very proud.
On a final note, there was a fantastic turn out at last night’s Year 7 Parents’ Evening. Thank you to everyone who attended, we hope you found the event useful.
Thank-you for your continued support.
Mr Davies.

- Sporting Success this week
-
Cricket
Well done to the U14s cricket team who played brilliant in Tuesday’s fixture. There were lots of positives with students batting and bowling performances. Well done boys.
-
Football
Well done to the Year 7 Football team who have finished 3rd in the Wigan Schools league and now qualify for the cup competition. Good Luck!
-
Rugby
The Year 7 rugby team were outstanding in the Wigan Warriors Rugby festival on Wednesday competing against various schools. It was great to see all the boys working as a team in their attacking performance as there were many tries scored.
-
Year 9 Leaders
It was great to see all our Year 9 leaders taking part in training with Wigan School Games Co-ordinator Mrs Walls in preparation for an upcoming primary school inclusion festival. This is an amazing opportunity for students to develop organisation, planning and communication skills.
-
Football
The Girls U15’s football team lost 3-0 to Marple High School in the semifinal of the County Cup. Considering the team is made up of Y7, 8 & 9 girls ONLY, this is a fantastic achievement and there looks like a positive future for this team. We can’t wait for next year.
-
Trampolining
Jaxon Hancock in Year 9 has been selected to represent the northwest trampoline team and competes in July. We would like to wish him all the best in the competition.
-
Football
Ollie Hogg and Oscar King have represented Atherton Town this year and after lots of hard work they have been crowned U13’s Wigan League Winners. Well done boys!
We are always excited to learn of any sporting successes outside of school so we can celebrate the student’s achievements. Please email Mr Gregory with any information so we can share with everyone on Freddie’s Focus – gregoryi@flhs.wigan.sch.uk

What we do at Freddie's and why we do it

Next Friday, four students from every form will receive a BEST Award. This is because they have demonstrated one or more of our character values seen above. We do this to highlight the importance of good character and to make sure that our students know that their positive contribution to our school is valued.
At Freddie's we want every student to become the best version of themself. We explicitly share what we believe are the values which help every student to become their very best.

Homework and Independent Learning
At Freddie’s, there are six types of homework set in order to embed key knowledge and ensure that your child is equipped with independent learning skills. Below are the types of homework that we set:

Applications that we use for learning
The following applications are used by our students during their time at FLHS to aid their learning. You can learn more about them below.
Microsoft Office
Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.

Satchel:One
Satchel:One is the school online learning platform for students and is the parental portal for all information related to your child’s overall progress within school. You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.

GCSEPod
GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.

Homework Club
Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday-Thursday in the Library (apart from Monday week B) where support and IT equipment is is available.
Attendance
We want to do all we can to support your child to be in school every day and ask that you support this important message from home, encouraging your child to avoid missing curriculum content through absence. Here is a breakdown of the absences for the following attendance percentages:

Thank you for your continued support with attendance.
