Freddie's Focus

For Parents & Carers

Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents & Carers,

This will be the final Freddie’s Focus for Parents for this term. It has been an excellent Autumn Term in the school, and I’d like to thank the majority of our parents who support us and the work that we do here in school. There will be an end of term letter sent out next week containing important updates for 2025.

The final arrangements for the end of term will be as follows:

Term ends on Friday 20th December at 12:15pm. The final day will be a non-uniform day, and we ask students on the last day of term to donate £1.00. Our chosen charity this term is the National Autistic Charity. On the final day we will have our Christmas celebration assemblies and awards. As well as our usual end of term achievement rewards, students will also be able to enter their BEST tickets for the prize draws. You have to be in it to win it! The term will finish, as is tradition, with a Christmas themed whole school assembly.

A special mention needs to go to our Year 11 Football Team who were crowned Wigan Champions in the final on Tuesday – beating Hawkley Hall 4-0. Well done lads!

Please look out for the end of term letter which will be sent out next week.

Thank-you for your continued support.

Mr Davies.

Things to celebrate

  • This week our Year 11 students have completed their second week of mock examinationsWe are delighted with their maturity and the way in which they have conducted themselves during the week.

  • During Form time students in Years 7 to 10 have completed their self-evaluationsPlease ask your child what they have identified as their areas of excellence and targets for the next termThey should have also identified a piece of work that they are particularly proud of this Term.

  • On Tuesday our Year 11 football team won the Wigan School’s CupFor further details see our sports successes below.
  • Freddie's Triumph in Cup Final

The Year 11 football team finished their Freddie's football career with a convincing 4-0 win against Hawkley Hall in the Wigan School's Cup Final on Tuesday night. The boys demonstrated amazing teamwork and a great desire to overcome their opponents and every one of the team should be very proud of their achievements.

This success comes on the back of their victory in Year 10 when they won the Wigan Schools Plate competition and the team currently holds the treble, if you also include their team of the year award, which they claimed at this year’s PE awards night.

All the boys were outstanding on the night, but a special mention must go to Cameron Taylor who won the man of the match trophy for his incredible performance in the final. Well done to all involved, we are very proud. Can we also thanks parents for their support on the night you were our 12th man, and the boys really appreciated you being there. #DOITFORCANNON #BLUETIES

Watch all four goals from our Year 11 Wigan Schools Cup final victory.

  • Track Star Finlay wins award

Finlay Farmer in Year 7 attended the Salford Mets athletics club presentation evening last week. Finn competed in the Youth Development League and the Cheshire League track and field competitions for the club this summer.

He picked up a trophy for the most points earned on the track at the Cheshire League meets for the under 13 boys at the club, running in 100m, 200m, 800m and 1500m (as well as 4x100m relay) across the season.

We are always excited to learn of any sporting successes outside of school so we can celebrate the student’s achievements. Please can parents email Mr Gregory with any information so we can share with everyone on Freddie’s Focus gregoryi@flhs.wigan.sch.uk

What we do at Freddie's and why we do it

Student-Self Evaluation:

Over the course of the academic Year, we provide an opportunity for our students to reflect on their learning, achievements, and areas for improvementThis is called our ‘Self-Evaluation, and it has taken place this week. We want all of our students to take ownership of their learning journey and to be able to reflect on what is going well and their next stepsWe also ask students to consider any pieces of work that they are most proud of in preparation for their end of Year ‘Student-Led Conference.  Please discuss the importance of this week with your child.

Homework and Independent Learning

The OSCAR model is something that we are promoting at Freddie’s in order to support your child with independent/self-directed study at home.

The ‘C’ stands for creativity. We know that learning happens when we have to think hard and actively do something with the information that we are trying to learn (and store in our long-term memory).

To support your child with this, the following tasks may be useful:

  • Creating a set of flashcards (there could be key questions or vocabulary on one side and the answers or definitions on the other);
  • Creating graphic organisers – this is a method of capturing information in a visual wayFor example:
  • Creating their own mini quizzes based on a topic so that they can self-test.
  • Capturing information as images alongside words (this technique is called Dual Coding)For example:

Applications that we use for learning

The following applications are used by our students during their time at FLHS to aid their learning. You can learn more about them below.

Microsoft Office

Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.

Satchel:One

Satchel:One is the school online learning platform for students and is the parental portal for all information related to your child’s overall progress within school. You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.

GCSEPod

GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.

Homework Club

Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday-Thursday in the Library (apart from Monday week B) where support and IT equipment is is available.

Attendance

We want to do all we can to support your child to be in school every day and ask that you support this important message from home, encouraging your child to avoid missing curriculum content through absence.  Here is a breakdown of the absences for the following attendance percentages:

Thank you for your continued support with attendance.

Belonging, Engaging, Succeeding Together.

Can we please remind all our parents and carers to use the correct channels of communication should they wish to raise a concern or question. You continued support is invaluable to us.
