Things to celebrate
- Last weekend a number of our students took part in the WigLe ‘Winter Wonderland Dance Festival’ at The Edge in Wigan.
- Last weekend and over the next week week our brass band and choir have been/will be entertaining the community. Events include, playing at the Amazon warehouse, Middlebrook Horwich and St. George’s church.
- On Tuesday we hosted our Senior citizens Christmas party. It was a superb event and wonderful to see so many guests in school enjoying Freddie’s entertainment and hospitality.
- On Wednesday our Year 7 students attended the Christingle Service at St George’s Church.
- On Thursday our Year 11 students took part in a mock interview day. We had approximately 20 external visitors in school to run these interviews. All were very complimentary of our school and the way in which our Year 11 students conducted themselves. Here is a comment from one of our visitors:
Just wanted to drop a line and say thank you for today. Your learners were incredibly engaged and motivated to give answers at the best of their ability. I have worked with a lot of schools but the positivity in the room really spoke volumes for the great environment you’ve created at Fred. Looking forward to working with you and the students again!

How we learn
Below are some of our study skills strategies which we encourage students to use as a method of helping them to retain information in the long-term memory. Actively doing something with the information that they have been taught is a really useful way of learning and remembering:
Homework and Self-directed study
Here at Freddie’s, we focus on six types of homework to help our students broaden, consolidate and extend their learning. Below is an explanation of why we try to set ‘Pod it’ homework or encourage our KS4 students to self-direct their study time at home:
Microsoft Office
Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.
Satchel:One
You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.
Homework Club
Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday-Thursday in the Library (apart from Monday week B) where support and IT equipment is is available.
Attendance
We want to do all we can to support your child to be in school every day and ask that you support this important message from home, encouraging your child to avoid missing curriculum content through absence. Here is a breakdown of the absences for the following attendance percentages:
Message from the Headteacher
A sincere thank you to all the staff and pupils at Fred Longworth High School for the lovely Christmas Party. We thoroughly enjoyed it - the pupils were so welcoming and such a credit to the school and their families. Thank- you and Merry Christmas to you all.
