Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents & Carers,
Exam season is now well underway for Year 11 with all the big exams starting this week, with English Literature on Monday and Maths on Thursday. There has been a very positive atmosphere amongst the year group, and I would like to extend my gratitude to all the other year groups who are being respectful around the site when near the exam spaces.
The weather has been kind to us this week and we hope this continues. Students have been asking whether or not we are able to open the field up at lunchtime. Unfortunately, this is not possible at the moment because we are not able to adequately supervise the field due to some staff absences. As soon as this situation changes, we will gladly open the field.
Thank-you for your continued support.
Mr Davies.

Things to celebrate

- Our Year 11 students are now well and truly into exams. It has been wonderful to see them make such a positive start and to see how supportive our other year groups have been in keeping corridors calm and quiet.
- Our Year 8 football team played the last 2 league games of their long season and beat St Edmund Arrowsmith and Bedford High to win the league and remain unbeaten for the full campaign.

Ellie Waller and Hannah Keigher in Year 9 have won the BBDFL Section U14s League last night with 3 games to spare, representing Tiki Taka Lionesses. They are unbeaten in the league this season and just need to win the Chairman’s Cup to secure the double. The team are moving to the North West Girls Superleague next season for a greater challenge. What a fantastic achievement

Yesterday the Year 8 football team played the last 2 league games of their long season needing to beat St Edmund Arrowsmith and Bedford to win the league and remain unbeaten for the full campaign. With Eddie’s and Freddie’s sitting together at the top of the league and on the same points, it was the first game where it mattered and the students did not disappoint, winning the game 3-1. Get in!!!
After a quick 5-minute break and some inspirational words from team captain Arley Tafa the second game was underway. Again, the team were fantastic winning the game 4-0 with a superb hat trick from the captain himself, Arley Tafa. The team were brilliant and have been all season. They have worked together, shown commitment to training and are enjoying the rewards. However, it’s not over yet. They will now play in a knock format to hopefully lift the cup. Good luck!
-
Football
Congratulations to Eva Holden who has won the South Manchester Girls Football League - U16 Danny McCaul Cup Final.
-
Football
Astley & Tyldesley Jaguars v Ashton on Mersey Jets. Final score 8 - 3. It was a very energetic and entertaining game especially considering it was 2-1 to A&T at half time.
We are always excited to learn of any sporting successes outside of school so we can celebrate the student’s achievements. Please email Mr Gregory with any information so we can share with everyone on Freddie’s Focus – gregoryi@flhs.wigan.sch.uk

What we do at Freddie's and why we do it
BEST Awards:

Next Friday, four students from every form will receive a BEST Award. This is because they have demonstrated one or more of our character values seen above. We do this to highlight the importance of good character and to make sure that our students know that their positive contribution to our school is valued.
At Freddie's we want every student to become the best version of themself. We explicitly share what we believe are the values which help every student to become their very best.

Homework and Independent Learning
The OSCAR model is something that we are promoting at Freddie’s in order to support your child with independent/self-directed study at home.
The ‘O’ stands for organisation. To support your child with this important skill, the following questions and prompts may be useful:
- Start by checking your satchel on ‘Satchel One’ to see what homework has been set and what your priority homework is tonight.
- Prepare your resources and equipment so that you have everything to hand before you start your homework.
- Decide on your outcome: What are you aiming to know or have practised in this time?
Applications that we use for learning
The following applications are used by our students during their time at FLHS to aid their learning. You can learn more about them below.
Microsoft Office
Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.

Satchel:One
Satchel:One is the school online learning platform for students and is the parental portal for all information related to your child’s overall progress within school. You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.

GCSEPod
GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.

Homework Club
Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday-Thursday in the Library (apart from Monday week B) where support and IT equipment is is available.
Attendance
We want to do all we can to support your child to be in school every day and ask that you support this important message from home, encouraging your child to avoid missing curriculum content through absence. Here is a breakdown of the absences for the following attendance percentages:

Thank you for your continued support with attendance.
