Things to celebrate

  • Our Year 10 students have attended their work experience placements this week. We are incredibly proud of the way in which they have conducted themselves in their places of employment. Any students who did not go out on a placement have taken part in a wide variety of careers activities and trips this week. We hope that all of the students have found the week of great value.
  • On Monday, our Year 9 students listened to an inspirational talk delivered by Richard McCannRichard talked to our students about resilience and overcoming challenges in life.

The below swimmers qualified and competed at the Lancashire county Championships 2024, and have further qualified to compete at the North West Regional Summer Championships throughout April/May 2024. A massive congratulations to each and every one of them:

  • Cole Hood (Wigan Best)
  • Mitchell Leek (Wigan Best)
  • Isabel Own-Holt (Wigan Best)
  • Melina-Grace Comerford (Wigan Best)

How we learn

Parents and carers can support their children at home to retrieve material learned in class so that it has more chance of sticking.  Encouraging children to create their own mini quizzes based on their learning is a great way of doing this. It is even better if you then become the quiz master and test them on the questions they have created.

The video below shows a short clip which explains how learning happens:

Evening of Dance

This years Evening of Dance is fast approaching! Tickets are on sale Tuesday and Thursday lunch from outside of the Dance studio. Take a look at some of last year’s highlights!

Homework and Self-directed study

At FLHS, homework is viewed as a valuable part of a student’s learning. Effective homework can improve learning and help our students to develop lifelong skills. Our aim is for homework to be structured, meaningful and coherent for all concerned. Homework at FLHS should broaden, consolidate, extend or enhance the learning.  For further information on the types of homework that we set and why, click here.

Microsoft Office

Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.

Satchel:One

You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.

GCSEPod

GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.

Homework Club

Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday-Thursday in the Library (apart from Monday week B) where support and IT equipment is is available.

Attendance

Last week we won the National School Attendance Award. We are now in the top 25% of similar FFT secondary schools in England.

Thank you for your continued support with attendance.

Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

Throughout the week we have been liaising with the various employers who have been hosting our students on work experience placements. Incredibly positive feedback has come back to us about your children and we hope that they have found the week and the experience useful. In total, 215 students have been out on placement.

It is important that I also use this forum to inform parents of some changes we have made to the school site this week. Now that we have gained more of our social areas back from the contractors developing the site, we have been able to re-evaluate the spaces that our students use at break and lunchtime. Years 9 and 10 are no longer in a separate zone at the rear of the school. This area has now been reserved exclusively for students in Year 7. Students in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 all have access to the larger social spaces at the front of the school.
All students have access to the canteen at Break. At lunchtime sittings are arranged as follows although we are keeping this under review:

  • First Sitting 1:20: Year 7 and Year 10.
  • Second Sitting 1:30:  Year 8 and Year 9.
Once the lunchtime sittings are over, students exit to their designated social spaces and there are no restrictions in the canteen. We allow any student to sit in the canteen space and enjoy it, and especially when it is raining. There are the usual range of activities to engage students at lunchtime.  PE, Music, Dance, Drama and the Library all offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities and students have access to the astro pitch to play football which is also fully supervised.

Finally, I would like to wish good luck to all the dancers and backstage crew who will be involved in next week’s Evening of Dance.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mr Davies.
