Message from the Headteacher
Dear Parents & Carers,
I’d like to start by thanking all Year 11 parents and carers who attended out Year 11 Parents’ Evening last night. We hope you found the event informative and helpful.
Anticipation is building in school for the school production – The Wiz – which takes place in a fortnight. I am assured that this is going to be a huge success! The spring term is always an exciting one for extra–curricular provision in our school. Preparations are also well underway for the annual Evening of Dance next half term. I cannot stress enough the importance of extra–curricular involvement and the wealth of opportunities that are available for students at our school. Your child does not have to be interested in the performing arts to get involved, there are a range of other activities to get involved with – details of which can be found here. Through extra-curricular involvement your child will learn skills beyond the classroom and get the opportunity to make new friends. Our Head of History, Miss Causby has this week spent time in Parliament training as a UK Parliament Teacher Ambassador. We are excited to see what new opportunities this will allow Miss Causby to bring to our school and thus develop another strand to our extra-curricular offer.
Many thanks for your continued support.
Mr Davies.

Things to celebrate
- This week we have celebrated our ‘Freddie’s Focus on the Stars’. Please ask your child if they received a shout out for their excellent with over the last two weeks and look out for the full list on our socials.
- On Tuesday all of Year 9 listened attentively to a guest talk by Cyrille Rollet from the School of Global Affairs at the University of Lancaster and the Alliance Française Manchester. Cyrille shared a range of real-world examples of how he has used different foreign languages in his life (including addressing the late Queen Elizabeth II in French!) and how increasingly important a foreign language will be in the future for today’s young people. The students also had the opportunity to ask Cyrille about life at university and what to consider when they are looking at further and higher education destinations.
- On Thursday we held our Year 11 Parents’ Evening in school. It was wonderful to see so many parents and carers attending this event.
- On Friday, the library hosted a Burns and Scotland event where students learnt about the history of Scotland, famous poet Robert Burns, competed in a quiz and sampled tasty shortbread.

Students who have qualified are:
Year 7:

Girls Football
The U13’s girls football team played in the County Cup ¼ final on Wednesday night at Priestnall High School in Stockport. The girls played great and took a 3-goal lead going into the second half. Unfortunately, a strong Priestnall team mounted a well-deserved comeback in the second half and the game finished FLHS 3 – 4 Priestnall. This is a fantastic foundation for the team to build on and we look forward to working with the girls every Thursday at training moving forwards.
We are always excited to learn of any sporting successes outside of school so we can celebrate the student’s achievements. Please can parents email Mr Gregory with any information so we can share with everyone on Freddie’s Focus – gregoryi@flhs.wigan.sch.uk

What we do at Freddie's and why we do it
‘Habits accelerate learning’
During lessons we use the ‘Learning behaviour wheel’ to ensure that all talk in lessons is purposeful and enhances your child’s learning experience. We want our students to be excellent orators and communicators which is why partner and group work is an aspect of our teaching that we encourage where appropriate.
‘Independent silent study’ is a vital part of your child’s learning experience. At key points in lessons teachers will use this for a period of time to allow students to fully focus and apply their understanding to a specific task without any distractions. This is a valuable opportunity for teachers to then circulate and see how well students have understood the work and offer support where necessary.

Homework and Independent Learning
At Freddie’s, there are six types of homework set in order to embed key knowledge and ensure that your child is equipped with independent learning skills. Below are the types of homework that we set:
Applications that we use for learning
The following applications are used by our students during their time at FLHS to aid their learning. You can learn more about them below.
Microsoft Office
Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.
Satchel:One
Satchel:One is the school online learning platform for students and is the parental portal for all information related to your child’s overall progress within school. You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.
GCSEPod
GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.
Homework Club
Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday-Thursday in the Library (apart from Monday week B) where support and IT equipment is is available.
Attendance
We want to do all we can to support your child to be in school every day and ask that you support this important message from home, encouraging your child to avoid missing curriculum content through absence. Here is a breakdown of the absences for the following attendance percentages:
Thank you for your continued support with attendance.
Belonging, Engaging, Succeeding Together.
Can we please remind all our parents and carers to use the correct channels of communication should they wish to raise a concern or question. You continued support is invaluable to us.
