Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents & Carers,

As parents will be aware, we held our Open Evening this week which was the first in our new school building. It is always a pleasure to ‘show off’ our school to prospective parents. During the evening itself, many of our students were involved either as guides showing around prospective parents or helping in the various faculties. They all did a fantastic job. The number of parents who commented on how delightful the students were should make us all feel very proud. The students were an absolute credit to the school, their families and themselves. I’d like to share some of the messages that I have received from parents.

What a fantastic Open Evening! It was an absolute pleasure to see and hear the enthusiasm the students clearly have for their school. Those that spoke after the Headteacher’s talk did so extremely well and with such confidence. I had already made my choice, but I have just had it confirmed. The students and staff are a real credit to the school. I look forward to my child becoming part of the “Freddie’s family.” Thank you.

Good afternoon,

I wanted to send a quick email following the open day on Wednesday 25th September to say a big thank you to our wonderful guide Dennis, from year 9, who showed my son around all the buildings. Dennis was really knowledgeable about the school and was a great role model and tour guide. We loved hearing about how much he enjoys being a pupil at Freddie’s and my son left feeling really excited about high school. I hope there is a way you can pass our thanks on to Dennis, he made our evening great fun!

Best wishes.

Good Evening,

I attended the open evening yesterday with my son and I just wanted to say a huge thank you to the young girl who looked after us, Violet from year 10. She guided us round mostly by herself as her partner had to leave early.  She let us know all about the subjects, the lessons, the teachers and what day-to-day school life is like and answered our questions on the way. She had a lovely, confident and mature nature that showed the school off in a great way – we were very impressed.  Her rapport with other students and teachers showed the school to be such a caring, friendly and fun place to be.

My little boy came away absolutely loving Fred Longworth and is looking forward to starting high school next year now that Violet has made it all seem not so daunting for him.

Thank you, Violet, for your time; you are a real credit to the school.

Kind regards.

Have a wonderful weekend and thank you for your continued support.

Mr Davies.

Things to celebrate

  • On Wednesday evening, we hosted our first Open Evening in our new school building. It was wonderful to see so many people in school.  We are also incredibly proud of the number of our students who participated in this event as guides and helpers – they were a credit to the school.
  • On Monday, some of our Music students went to see ‘Brassed Off’ at the Bolton Octagon Theatre.  A great time was had by all.
  • On Thursday, our librarian (Mrs Hibbert) and our languages department held a fantastic event in the library celebrating European Languages Day. The linguistic talents of staff and students were on show with French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and German!
  • On Friday, some of our Drama students took part in a workshop with a theatre company ‘Ordinary Glory’. This was an incredible experience for our students to work alongside professionals.
  • School Athletics

Well done to all students who represented the school athletics team on Wednesday at Leigh Sports Village. There were some great individual performances and a special mention to the girls' team who finished first in the overall team event retaining their title.

  • U14's Cricket Final

The U14’s Cricket team finally played their Lancashire Cup final last week after several postponements due to bad weather. The standard of play was exceptional. Sadly, the team lost narrowly to a very good Cannon Slade team finishing runners up.

  • U15's Football

The U15’s boys football team beat Ormiston 6-0 in the first round of the national cup competition and progress to the next round after a dominant display in a tricky away fixture.

We are always excited to learn of any sporting successes outside of school so we can celebrate the student’s achievements. Please can parents email Mr Gregory with any information so we can share with everyone on Freddie’s Focus gregoryi@flhs.wigan.sch.uk

What we do at Freddie's and why we do it

’Freddie’s Focus on the Stars’ is back from Monday 7th October’

This is where teachers will select four students who have excelled in specific subjects over the past fortnight (month in the case of the first one).

  • All students who are given a shout out on ‘FF on the Stars’ will receive three reward points on the system.
  • Any students who receive a Head of Year award will receive a badge from their Head of Year.
  • Any students who receive the Head Teacher’s Award will receive a badge and five reward points. These students will be asked to go to Mr Davies’ office at one point during that week to meet with the Headteacher and discuss their achievements.

At Freddie’s celebration, praise and reward are at the heart of all that we do. We want all of our students to strive for excellence.

Homework and Independent Learning

The OSCAR model is something that we are promoting at Freddie’s in order to support your child with independent/self-directed study at home.

The ‘S’ stands for select. To support your child with this important skill, the following questions and prompts may be useful:

  • Have you checked ‘Satchel One’ to see what you have been set and what your priority is?
  • Which subject/piece of homework are you going to focus on tonight?
  • Which key pieces of knowledge will you focus on?
  • If this is self-directed study, why don’t you focus on subjects or topics that you have forgotten or are likely to forget?

Applications that we use for learning

The following applications are used by our students during their time at FLHS to aid their learning. You can learn more about them below.

Microsoft Office

Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.

Satchel:One

Satchel:One is the school online learning platform for students and is the parental portal for all information related to your child’s overall progress within school. You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.

GCSEPod

GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.

Homework Club

Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday-Thursday in the Library (apart from Monday week B) where support and IT equipment is is available.

Attendance

We want to do all we can to support your child to be in school every day and ask that you support this important message from home, encouraging your child to avoid missing curriculum content through absence.  Here is a breakdown of the absences for the following attendance percentages:

Thank you for your continued support with attendance.
