E-Bike and E-Scooter Usage

Dear Parent/Carer,

I write to address an important matter concerning the safety and well-being of our school community and local residents.

Recently, we have received complaints from local residents and road users regarding the dangerous conduct of individuals using e-bikes and e-scooters on roads and pathways near the school. These incidents have raised serious concerns about the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users. Furthermore, their presence creates an additional security/safety risk during the day which we cannot mitigate.

Considering these concerns, we are implementing new measures to ensure the safety of everyone in our community. Immediately after half-term (Monday 3rd November), students are not permitted to travel to school on e-bikes or e-scooters.

Additionally, if parents or carers are using e-bikes for their own travel, these must be left outside the school gates, at the owner’s own risk, and not brought onto school premises.

We would like to remind you of the UK legislation regarding e-bikes:

  • E-bikes that meet the criteria for Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPCs) can only be legally used by individuals aged 14 or over.

To meet the criteria for an EAPC, an E-bike:

  • Must have pedals that can be used to propel it
  • Must not be able to propel the bike at more than 15.5 mph
  • E-bikes that do not meet EAPC regulations are classified as a motorcycle and requires registration, insurance, and a valid driving licence.
  • E-bikes are not permitted for use on pavements or pathways.

These regulations are in place to ensure the safe and responsible use of such vehicles, and non-compliant bikes can be seized under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act to be crushed.

We kindly ask for your cooperation in adhering to these rules to protect the safety of our students, staff, and the wider community.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.

Yours sincerely,

Mr P Davies
