A tribute in poppies
A cascade of handmade poppies, each carrying a personal message, was unveiled at the front of Fred Longworth High School this morning as part of the school’s Remembrance commemorations.
The Poppy Waterfall was created by the school’s student librarians and staff. Every poppy in the display was made by hand and carries a message of thanks or remembrance from a member of the school community.
Guests, representatives of the Royal British Legion, students and staff gathered for the opening ceremony. The project began with a simple aim: to create a fitting tribute within school to all those who have served, who continue to serve, and who gave their lives for their country.
The ceremony
After the welcome, the school handed over to the Royal British Legion Parade Marshal, Mr Keith Houghton MBE, who led the act of remembrance.
Mr Houghton read the Exhortation, with everyone present joining in the response, “We will remember them.” The Last Post was then played, and the whole gathering fell silent for a minute in tribute to the fallen.
The ceremony closed with Mr Houghton reading the Kohima Epitaph, which ends with the words “For your tomorrow, we gave our today.”
Celebrating the people behind it
The morning was also a chance to recognise the students who gave their time, skills and commitment to the project. What started as an idea grew into a striking display, thanks to the enthusiasm and hard work of the student librarians and the staff who worked alongside them.
As guests were reminded during the ceremony, the occasion was about more than unveiling a display. It showed what the school community can achieve when everyone comes together for a meaningful cause.
The Poppy Waterfall will remain at the front of the school throughout the Remembrance period, and we would like to thank everyone who helped to make it, and our guests from the Royal British Legion for joining us.
Lest we forget.
