Things to celebrate

- Last week was our Self-Evaluation week. Students use their time during Form to reflect upon their areas of excellence and next steps. They were also asked to log pieces of work that they have been particularly proud of this Term.
- On Tuesday many of our students took part in our rock band gig at ‘The Yard’ in Manchester. This was an incredible experience for all involved.
- Sporting Success this week
It has been another busy week of sport across school with several teams and individuals representing us proudly.

-
Year 9 Netball
On Wednesday evening, the Year 9 netball team competed against five schools in what proved to be a very tough night of fixtures. Despite the challenging opposition, the girls showed great resilience and commitment throughout. Players of the Match were Alex Mansel, Megan Burke and Abby Molyneux for their outstanding performances and attitude.
-
Under 15's Girls Football
The Under‑15s girls’ football team were involved in a dramatic Manchester Cup quarter‑final against a strong St Peter’s team. After leading 1–0 for a large percentage of the match, the girls were extremely unfortunate to concede an equaliser with just two minutes remaining, taking the game to penalties. Sadly, they narrowly lost 10–9 on penalties, bringing an end to a fantastic cup run. A brave performance and one the team can be very proud of.
-
Year 10 Football
The Year 10 football team played their final central venue fixtures on Thursday after school. A strong effort was shown by everyone involved across the season. A big well done to the group – let’s go again in Year 11.
Congratulations also go to the following Year 10 boys:
- Thomas Johnson
- Riley Garside
- Oliver Cooke
- James Anderson
- Aiden Barnes
They represented Tyldesley U15s yesterday and secured a semi‑final victory against Warrington, meaning they now progress to the Lancashire Plate Final on April 26th. An outstanding team display with no substitutes available, showing excellent discipline and determination throughout the match.
-
Karate Championships
Finally, a huge congratulations to Keavy Boden‑Smith (Year 7), who competed at the National Karate Championships in Birmingham this weekend and won her category. This is an incredible achievement as Keavy moved up from Under 4ft 9” Under‑16s (which she has already won twice) into the Under 5ft 3” category, where she defeated a Year 10 black belt to retain her national title.
-
Footwear Reminder
Reminder about the football boots policy we have at Freddie's and what students can and can’t wear when participating in sport on the 3G surface. We continue to do our best to ensure we maintain the quality of the playing surface for many years to come so all students can benefit from using our top-class facility. Thanks for your support and should you have any questions please contact Mr Gregory.
We are always excited to learn of any sporting successes outside of school so we can celebrate the student’s achievements. Please email Mr Gregory with any information so we can share with everyone on Freddie’s Focus – gregoryi@flhs.wigan.sch.uk

Homework and Independent Learning
At Freddie’s we set six specific types of homework to broaden, consolidate and enhance learning. Below are the types of homework that your child can expect:
We strongly encourage all of our KS4 students to access the self-directed study hub.
Applications that we use for learning
The following applications are used by our students during their time at FLHS to aid their learning. You can learn more about them below.
Microsoft Office
Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.
Satchel:One
Satchel:One is the school online learning platform for students and is the parental portal for all information related to your child’s overall progress within school. You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.
GCSEPod
GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.
Homework Club
Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday to Thursday where they can complete work in a quiet environment with staff on hand to support them, and computers for online quizzes and research.
Attendance
We want to do all we can to support your child to be in school every day and ask that you support this important message from home, encouraging your child to avoid missing curriculum content through absence. Here is a breakdown of the absences for the following attendance percentages:
