For Parents & Carers

Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents & Carers,

When a student is absent from school, it is very important that they take the time to catch up on any missed work as soon as possible. Each lesson builds on previous learning, and missing even a short period of instruction can make it more difficult for students to fully understand new topics.

Catching up on missed work helps students stay on track with their learning, maintain confidence in the classroom, and avoid falling behind their peers. It also allows teachers to ensure that all students have the knowledge and skills needed for future lessons and assessments.

We kindly ask that you support your child by encouraging them to check what work was missed, complete it promptly, and speak with their teacher if they need help or clarification. Your support plays an important role in helping students stay organised and successful in their studies. To help with this, Mr Taylor will also send a weekly reminder on Satchel One. We do recognise that for some students there will be a particular set of circumstances that mean they will not always be able to catch up on missed work.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mr Davies

Things to celebrate

  • Last week we celebrated our ‘FF Stars’.  This takes place fortnightly at Freddie’s and celebrates the work of our students who have excelled in a subject or Year team over the previous two weeks.

  • On Wednesday our Year 9 students took part in the National Careers Conference which we hosted in school.

It has been an outstanding week of sporting success across multiple year groups, with our students demonstrating superb skill, teamwork and determination.

  • Year 8 Boys’ Football – Two Emphatic Wins

The Year 8 boys’ football team delivered two dominant performances this week, winning their fixtures 2–0 and 4–0 respectively. The boys were amazing from start to finish, showcasing excellent teamwork, clinical finishing and impressive defensive organisation. A brilliant pair of results that reflect their hard work and growing confidence.

  • Year 10/11 Girls’ Netball – Victory Against Bedford

Our combined Year 10 and 11 girls’ netball team secured a well‑deserved 8–6 win against Bedford High School. This closely‑contested match provided invaluable match practice as the students continue preparing for their upcoming GCSE PE moderation. A strong, disciplined performance from the whole squad.

  • Sports Hall Athletics – Gold & Bronze for Freddie’s

Thursday night’s Sports Hall Athletics competition was a resounding success for our athletes:

  • Y7 Boys – GOLD
  • Y8 Boys – BRONZE

Both teams were fantastic, competing with energy, focus and real determination. The standard on show was outstanding and reflects a very promising outlook ahead of the summer term athletics events

  • Year 8 Girls’ Netball – A Positive Week of Performances

The Year 8 girls’ netball team enjoyed a busy week, playing three fixtures and winning two out of three. Across all matches the girls displayed great teamwork, resilience and improving tactical awareness. A brilliant set of performances that highlight their continued development.

  • Footwear Reminder

Reminder about the football boots policy we have at Freddie's and what students can and can’t wear when participating in sport on the 3G surface. We continue to do our best to ensure we maintain the quality of the playing surface for many years to come so all students can benefit from using our top-class facility. Thanks for your support and should you have any questions please contact Mr Gregory.

We are always excited to learn of any sporting successes outside of school so we can celebrate the student’s achievements. Please email Mr Gregory with any information so we can share with everyone on Freddie’s Focus gregoryi@flhs.wigan.sch.uk

School Reminders

  • Year 9 - Options Deadline

The deadline for Year 9 Options choices to be handed in to Form Tutors was Friday 13th March.

  • Year 10 - Work Experience

Year 10 Work Experience will take place week commencing 16th March.

  • Year 10 - Parents' Evening

Year 10 Parents’ Evening will take place on Thursday 26th March from 4.30pm.

  • Important Notice - Aerosols

Aerosols are not permitted in school due to safety reasons. Please support us in ensuring your child does not bring an aerosol into school. Roll-on and stick type deodorant are permitted.

  • Self-Directed Study Hub Updates

For our Year 11 students, as the GCSE examinations draw closer, it is really important that students revise in a focused and strategic way. Parents can support this by directing their child to the Develop My Knowledge section of the Self Directed Study Hub, where they will find subject checklists designed to guide their revision. At this stage of the course, it is essential that students think carefully and honestly about what they do and do not yet know. Working through the checklists will help them identify gaps in their knowledge, prioritise the topics that need the most attention, and ensure their revision time is purposeful and effective in the final weeks leading up to the exams.

  • General Reminder

Can we please ask for your support in ensuring that your child brings their Yondr pouch daily as part of their essential equipment. Pouches should remain closed to protect the locking mechanism.

What we do at Freddie's and why we do it

At Freddie’s, we encourage our students to use their manners at all times. This is a way of explicitly teaching what good manners look and sound like.  It is also something which we feel contributes to a positive school environment and the Freddie’s community.  ‘STEPS’ is used as a reminder in all classrooms and around school. Where we see students exhibiting good manners, we praise and reward them. If students forget to use their manners or need to be supported to correct their behaviour, ‘STEPS’ is something we would refer them to.

Homework and Independent Learning

Below are some of our study skills strategies which we encourage students to use as a method of helping them to retain information in the long-term memory.  Actively doing something with the information that they have been taught is a really useful way of learning and remembering:

Applications that we use for learning

The following applications are used by our students during their time at FLHS to aid their learning. You can learn more about them below.

Microsoft Office

Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.

Satchel:One

Satchel:One is the school online learning platform for students and is the parental portal for all information related to your child’s overall progress within school. You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.

GCSEPod

GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.

Homework Club

Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday to Thursday where they can complete work in a quiet environment with staff on hand to support them, and computers for online quizzes and research.

Attendance

We want to do all we can to support your child to be in school every day and ask that you support this important message from home, encouraging your child to avoid missing curriculum content through absence.  Here is a breakdown of the absences for the following attendance percentages:
