Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents & Carers,

Welcome back to school as we begin the summer term. I hope you and your families have had a restful and enjoyable break and that your children are returning refreshed and ready for the opportunities ahead.

The summer term is always a busy and important time in the school year, with many opportunities for progress, achievement, and celebration across all year groups. We encourage all students to approach the weeks ahead with a positive attitude, determination, and a commitment to doing their very best.

I would like to offer a special mention to our Year 11 students as they begin their examination period. This is a significant milestone, and we wish them every success. They have worked hard to reach this point, and we are confident they will approach their exams with focus and resilience.

As a school community, we look forward to a positive and productive term. Thank you, as always, for your continued support in helping your children succeed.

Mr Davies

Things to celebrate

  • Over the Easter holiday, we ran our annual Spain/Disney trip.  Our students were a credit to us and a wonderful time was had by all.

  • Our Easter football tournament ran over the holiday.  This is an excellent community event and many of our students get involved.

  • On Tuesday this week, a group of our Year 8 students went to Quarry Bank Mill on a History trip.  This was an excellent opportunity to explore some of our local history.

  • On Wednesday a group of our Year 9 students attended a careers event at Stockport County, looking at different job roles and talking about each of the departments including Sports, Media, Commercial, and Finance.

  • On Friday all of our Year 7 students took part in the National Careers Challenge event.

We are delighted to celebrate another fantastic week of sporting success and commitment from our students, both in competition and through leadership and community support

  • Trampolining

Jaxon Hancock (Year 10) delivered an outstanding performance, competing in the North West Regional Qualifier Round 3 last weekend. Jaxon finished first place, an excellent achievement at a highly competitive regional level. A tremendous result and a true reflection of his dedication and hard work.

  • Crown Green Bowling

Leila‑Mae Roked (Year 8) achieved first place in the Lancashire Crown Green Bowling Championships within her age category. This is a brilliant accomplishment and highlights her talent and composure in a competitive county competition.

  • Trampoline Qualifiers

Phoebe Harris (Year 8) attended the first English Trampoline and DMT Qualifier hosted at Birmingham University. Competing in the Bronze 13–14 Female category, Phoebe finished 9th out of 28 competitors, gaining valuable experience at a national qualifying event – a fantastic effort.

  • Easter Football Tournament

We would also like to commend all student referees who volunteered their time and expertise to support the FLHS Easter Football Tournament. Their professionalism, confidence, and commitment were vital to the success of the event.

  • Fundraising

Reyhan Yilmaz (Year 10) demonstrated exceptional character and compassion by completing a running challenge to raise money for her friends' parent, who is a primary school teacher, following their cancer diagnosis. This inspiring act of fundraising and support deserves high praise and recognition.

  • FA Women’s England Talent Pathway

Finally, Millie Jones (Year 9) continues to impress after being invited to attend the FA Women’s England Talent Pathway “Future Lionesses” Talent ID Event, held on 2nd April 2026. This was an exclusive, invite‑only event with just 11 girls selected, highlighting Millie’s potential and progress within the national pathway.

Well done to all students involved – your achievements, leadership, and dedication make the school community incredibly proud.

  • Footwear Reminder

Reminder about the football boots policy we have at Freddie's and what students can and can’t wear when participating in sport on the 3G surface. We continue to do our best to ensure we maintain the quality of the playing surface for many years to come so all students can benefit from using our top-class facility. Thanks for your support and should you have any questions please contact Mr Gregory.

We are always excited to learn of any sporting successes outside of school so we can celebrate the student’s achievements. Please email Mr Gregory with any information so we can share with everyone on Freddie’s Focus gregoryi@flhs.wigan.sch.uk

Aerosols are not permitted in school due to safety reasons. Please support us in ensuring your child does not bring an aerosol into school. Roll-on and stick type deodorant are permitted.

  • Year 11 - Final Arrangements

The Year 11 letter from Mr Davies was recently sent out, outlining all arrangements for the final Term at Freddie’s. Please ensure that you have read the letter and direct any further questions to your child’s Head of Year or our exams officer, Mrs Waldie.

  • Self-Directed Study Hub Updates

It brings together all the essential revision materials and past papers in one familiar, reliable place, helping students revise properly, practise real exam questions, and build confidence through focused, structured work. Encouraging your child to use The Study Hub regularly over the next few weeks can really help them stay organised, feel prepared, and make the most of their revision time.

  • General Reminder

Can we please ask for your support in ensuring that your child brings their Yondr pouch and a suitable school bag daily as part of their essential equipment. Your continued support is invaluable to us.

What we do at Freddie's and why we do it

At Freddie’s we want our students to develop as excellent learners who ultimately achieve the very best from their time at school.  Below are the FLHS BEST Standards.

We want there to be no learning time lost!

These standards are displayed in all classrooms and referred to as a constant reminder of the positive learning habits that we want all students to display:

Homework and Independent Learning

At Freddie’s we set six specific types of homework to broaden, consolidate and enhance learning. Below are the types of homework that your child can expect:

We strongly encourage all of our KS4 students to access the self-directed study hub.

Applications that we use for learning

The following applications are used by our students during their time at FLHS to aid their learning. You can learn more about them below.

Microsoft Office

Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.

Satchel:One

Satchel:One is the school online learning platform for students and is the parental portal for all information related to your child’s overall progress within school. You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.

GCSEPod

GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.

Homework Club

Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday to Thursday where they can complete work in a quiet environment with staff on hand to support them, and computers for online quizzes and research.

Attendance

We want to do all we can to support your child to be in school every day and ask that you support this important message from home, encouraging your child to avoid missing curriculum content through absence.  Here is a breakdown of the absences for the following attendance percentages:
