For Parents & Carers

Things to celebrate

  • This week our Evening of Dance took place on Monday and Tuesday night.  It was wonderful to see such talent, energy and commitment from our amazing students.  Congratulations to everyone involved.

  • On Thursday night a number of our Y11 students and parents took part in an exam preparation workshop.  We would like to thank everyone for attending and hope that you found this event useful.

  • We would like to praise all of our Y8 and 9 students for the way in which they conducted themselves during the switch to remote learning earlier this week.

  • Mrs Waring would like to say thank you to all of the parents and carers who took the time to complete the Mental Health questionnaire.  The feedback was very much appreciated and will be acted upon.

Homework and Self-directed study

This week, we’d like to share another of our homework strands: ‘Retrieve it’. These are tasks which prompt students to recall/remember key information. The more we encourage students to retrieve information, the more chance we have of it ‘sticking’ and remaining in the long term memory for students to retrieve with ease.  You could encourage your child to review their learning and undertake a series of retrieval tasks using the following techniques:

  • Self-testing using any knowledge organisers in class books
  • Quizzes set on Satchel:One
  • Self-testing by creating their own mini quizzes
  • Creating their own set of flashcards
  • Displaying information visually through the use of graphic organisers.  See the following example of a graphic organiser

Homework Club

Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday-Thursday where they can complete work in a quiet environment with staff on hand to support them.

Personal Development

As part of our work on developing character, assemblies over the next few weeks will be focusing on kindness exploring the importance of being motivated in order to achieve and be successful.

Message from the Headteacher

This has been a very strange week. On the one hand, it has been really uplifting to see the school come alive with the fabulous Evening of Dance. So many of our students were involved in this and to see them putting their heart and soul into the performance was wonderful. It struck me to see the power of older students mentoring younger students through their choreography of some of the dances that took place. They were real role models.

It is evenings like this, and the dedication and preparation that is required to make them possible, that make our school special. On the other hand, this week we have once again had to manage the damaging impact of Covid. With 20 members of staff absent from school on Monday and Tuesday, it has been impossible to keep the school open to all year groups safely. We continue to ride this storm and I can only hope that it abates soon. I thank you for your patience

Mr Davies.
