Things to celebrate

  • On Friday, a number of our students received a BEST Award.  These  notable awards are given to students who have excelled themselves in demonstrating one or more of our FLHS character values as nominated by their form teacher. A huge well done to all our winners. See our character values below:
  • On Thursday night, a group of our music students performed a live gig at ‘Factory 251’ in Manchester. The youngest performer was just 11 years old – what an achievement! We are incredibly proud of everyone who took part in this brilliant event.
Year Group / Team
Year 7 - Football Semi Final FLHS had an excellent game during their semi-final fixture against St John Fisher. They won 3 –1. Goals scored by Luca Bracek and Aston Braddish.

Homework and Self-directed study

Students in Y7 and Y8 should be completing two ‘See Readers’ on ‘Reading Plus’ each week. This should take 30 minutes as part of their English homework, and our drive to improve reading standards and ensure students’ reading age matches or surpasses their biological age.

Satchel:One

You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.

Homework Club

Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday-Thursday in the Library (apart from Monday week B) where support and IT equipment is is available.

Attendance

Attendance Messages to Parents and Carers – please read to be aware of what good attendance is and the impact of poor attendance. Our key message is EVERY DAY COUNTS.

Why is it important to have good attendance?

Good attendance habits pay off! More school days attended increases a child’s academic success, improves their chances to achieve good GCSE grades leading to greater chances of success at college and later in life, so they can earn higher pay in their careers. 80% of success is showing up! School keeps you safe, it educates you, it prepares you for your future.

What is a good school attendance percentage?

95%

An attendance rate of 95% is generally considered good; this still allows for children to miss 9.5 days across the school year. Persistent absence (PA) is defined as an attendance rate of 90% or below.

At Freddie’s we would like all students to aim for 97% attendance – this equates to 6 days absence per year.

How many days off is 90% attendance?

90% attendance means that your child is absent from lessons for the equivalent of one half day every week. Over five years this is the equivalent of about one half of a school year.

Examples of poor attendance and what this means in terms of days lost:

School Attendance Percentage Days Absent
85
29 days off
86
27 days off
87
25 days off
88
23 days off

Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have become aware of a small number of negative comments that have appeared on social media this week about the school.  A polite reminder to all parents that social media is not an appropriate forum to raise what can often be complex and emotionally-charged issues. Very often in this forum, information can become misconstrued or misrepresented. If parents do have genuine concerns to raise with the school,  please do so using the usual channels of communication. Whenever parents have directly raised any concern with us, we have invited parents in to school with the majority of them being resolved through dialogue and an agreement between all parties. Unfortunately, on a few occasions recently, we have not had the support of a minority of parents who have either not engaged with the school at all, or who are being unreasonable in their demands.

Freddie’s has always been at the heart of our community, and we always pride ourselves on our excellent reputation in terms of safeguarding, behaviour and outcomes. Many of you will also have been students at the school and you will know how much we value the Freddie’s Family, and we cannot stress enough the importance of building and maintaining strong school-parent relationships.

Thank you,

Mr Davies.
