Things to celebrate

  • This week, we have welcomed our up-and-coming Year 7 students into school for their taster days. The students gave an excellent first impression to the staff, and we are really looking forward to seeing you all in September.
  • Last week, a number of our Year 7 students attended our Paris trip. A wonderful time was had by all, and the behaviour of our students was exemplary.
  • This week, Freddie’s Brass Band and some of Freddie’s singers featured on BBC Radio Manchester following the release of the Take That film, ‘Greatest Day’ featuring the band. A fantastic experience for all involved.
  • Tonight is our eagerly awaited Year 11 Leavers’ Prom at the Last Drop Village as we say our final farewells to the year group before welcoming them back to school for results day on Thursday 24th August.

School Reminders

  • National Teacher Strikes

The school will be closed to all students with the exception of Year 10 on Wednesday 5th July and Friday 7th July due to national teacher strikes – please see the message from Mr Davies.

  • Freddie's Arts Week

Next week is Freddie’s Arts week. Throughout the week, students will be taking part in various Arts events that expose them to a range of wider experiences in the fields of Art, Drama, Dance and Music.

  • Student-Led Conference

On Monday 10th July, we will be holding our Student-Led Conferences in school. All students are expected to attend a 10-minute appointment in full school uniform. Booking for this event should be made using SchoolCloud.

  • General Reminder

Could we please ask all parents and carers to support us in ensuring that your child wears the correct summer uniform should they choose to do so. Skirts must be worn at an appropriate length and socks must be plain black and knee high (no bows). We are also seeing some students in trainers and ask that school shoes are still worn during our final half term.

Homework and Self-directed study

This week, we would like to share another of our homework strands: ‘Spell it’. This might include learning key vocabulary for a subject or understanding the etymology of words. Please remind your child to look through their exercise books to check if they have any spelling corrections to address.

Satchel:One

You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.

Homework Club

Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday-Thursday in the Library (apart from Monday week B) where support and IT equipment is is available.

Attendance

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are very keen to ensure that as many of our students as possible have good attendance. Please see the information below on the importance of good attendance.

Why is attendance at school so important?

When students are not frequently absent, their grades and reading skills often improve – even among those students who are struggling in school. Students who frequently attend school feel more connected to their community and develop strong social skills and friendships, which are important life skills.

How does attendance affect achievement in UK schools?

Of those who were persistently absent (below 90% attendance), 40.2% achieved the expected standard in reading, writing and maths compared to 83.9% of pupils with no missed sessions, and 71.9% who missed between 0 and 5%.(May 2022).

Does attendance affect GCSE results?

Students whose attendance drops below 94% will have missed 2 weeks of school. This has a significant impact on GCSE results. Students with no absence are over twice as likely to achieve 5 or more GCSEs at grades 5-9 including English and Mathematics.

Is attendance truly important?

Missing 10 percent, or about 18 days, of the school year can drastically affect a student’s academic success. Students can be chronically absent even if they only miss a day or two every few weeks. Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child do well beyond school and secure employment in later life.

Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

A special well done to all our Year 6 students who have been fantastic this week during their transition week. It has been a pleasure to welcome them into school. We also look forward to welcoming all of our Year 6 Parents next Thursday (6th July) for our transition evening.

On another note, as you will probably be aware by now, further strike action is planned next week for Wednesday 5th and Friday 7th July. As a result, school will be closed to most students on both of these days although we are making plans to bring in Year 10 students for part of each day. The arrangements for Year 10 will be sent out to you as soon as possible. Please remember that this strike is part of an ongoing national dispute against the government and not the school.

Regards,

Mr Davies.
