Message from the Headteacher
Dear Parents & Carers,
I’d like to start my message this week by thanking the parents and carers who attended their child’s Student Led Conference on Monday 7th July. This is such an important event on our calendar, providing you with an opportunity to celebrate with your child, their achievements and successes over the last academic year. As one parent said to me on the evening itself:
“I cannot believe how articulate my son was during the conference and the way he showed a confidence that I had not seen before. He has learnt some important lessons this year which he will now hopefully take on board and into next year.”
Year 10 attended their College Taster Days on Wednesday, and this will no doubt have given them a taste of life beyond secondary school, spurring them on as they gear up for their final year here at Freddie’s. It is always nice when we are contacted by external agencies about our students. This is from an email sent by The Co-Ordinator of the Taster Days at Wigan and Leigh College:
“I just wanted to get in touch to say a huge THANK YOU! for today. Many tutors commented on how they were the 'best students yet'. To put that into context, we have had 23 schools for Sampling so far, so a huge compliment! Staff also commented on their fantastic overall behaviour, attitude, and manners throughout the day. To echo what I said to my group, the whole cohort were a credit to themselves, their families and Freddie’s.”
So that parents are aware, our assemblies this week have been focused on staying safe over the summer holidays. The assembly also contains useful information for parents and a copy of it can be found here.
Finally, the arrangements for the final week of term are as follows:
Sports Day takes place on Wednesday 16th July. Please note that the event will finish at the slightly earlier time of 2:45pm. On the day, students should come to school wearing their PE kit and a top in their team colour. To ensure everyone stays safe and comfortable, please also make sure your child brings the following:
- A water bottle
- Suncream (applied before school and/or brought with them)
- Any required medication (e.g. inhalers)
My end of term letter will be going out next week. This will contain important information for the start of next term. Please look out for this.
Thank-you for your continued support.
Mr Davies.

Things to celebrate

- On Monday we hosted our Student-Led Conferences. It was wonderful to see so many parents and carers in school and to see our students articulating their learning journey with such confidence.
- On Tuesday a group of our students attended the National Careers Challenge Final at the Barbican Centre London. This was a fantastic opportunity for all involved and we hope it may lead to more exciting opportunities for them in the future.
Ben Dyer, co-founder of The Inspirational Learning Group, remarked,
“It was incredible to witness the creativity and determination these students brought to the Challenge. Our partnership with NatWest Thrive and support from our employer collaborators ensured that young people could tackle real-world challenges, build essential skills and see themselves as the innovators and leaders of tomorrow.”
- On Wednesday our Year 10 students attended the Wigan and Leigh College taster day. This was the feedback that we received:
“The group I looked after at PW were amazing, many tutors commented on how they were the 'best students yet'. To put that into context, we have had 23 schools for Sampling so far, so a huge compliment! Staff also commented on their fantastic overall behaviour, attitude, and manners throughout the day. To echo what I said to my group, the whole cohort were a credit to themselves, their families and Freddie’s.”
- This week our Brass Band are heading on a European Tour. This is an incredible opportunity for all involved. They will be performing in, and visiting four countries – Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and France.
- Earlier in the week we took part in the Maths Challenge and came third.

Homework and Independent Learning
The OSCAR model is something that we are promoting at Freddie’s in order to support your child with independent/self-directed study at home.
The ‘A’ stands for Area.
Ask your child to consider if the space where they are choosing to complete homework is the most appropriate. Distractions, such as the TV or iPads, won’t help them to focus and really think hard about the work they’re producing. Mobile phones (unless being used for the homework) need to be out of sight to avoid distraction or procrastinating.
Applications that we use for learning
The following applications are used by our students during their time at FLHS to aid their learning. You can learn more about them below.
Microsoft Office
Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.
Satchel:One
Satchel:One is the school online learning platform for students and is the parental portal for all information related to your child’s overall progress within school. You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.
GCSEPod
GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.
Homework Club
Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday to Thursday where they can complete work in a quiet environment with staff on hand to support them, and computers for online quizzes and research.
Attendance
We want to do all we can to support your child to be in school every day and ask that you support this important message from home, encouraging your child to avoid missing curriculum content through absence. Here is a breakdown of the absences for the following attendance percentages:
Thank you for your continued support with attendance.
