Freddie's Focus

For Parents & Carers

Things to celebrate

  • This is our tenth Freddie’s Focus for parents and carers. We would like to thank everyone for their support and for taking the time to read our weekly publication.

  • This week we held our Year 10 Parents’ Evening. It was lovely to see so many parents and carers back in school.

  • We would like to wish our Year 11 students the very best of luck as the examination season commences.

School Reminders

  • School Access

Due to the current building work, we ask parents not to drive down Printshop Lane with the only exception being those who need to drop off or pick up disabled students or those with medical needs.

  • County Cup Final

On Wednesday 18th May our Year 11 Football team will be playing in the Greater Manchester Schools County Cup Final. This event will take place at Leigh Sports Village-5pm kick off.

  • SIMS Parent App

We have migrated from the SIMS Parent App for parental communication to Satchel:One. The SIMS Parent App will still function on your phone, but it will no longer be live or updated and can be uninstalled. If you do not have a parental account for Satchel:One, please contact our ICT Support department at ictsupport@flhs.wigan.sch.uk for further assistance.

  • General Reminder

Jewellery is not allowed in school. We are becoming increasingly concerned with the number of students that we are having to speak to each morning about the same issue. We would appreciate your support in ensuring that your child does not wear jewellery for school.

Homework and Self-directed study

Students may be expected to undertake a variety of homework activities. These activities will differ depending on the teacher and subject. We would also like to highlight that the guidelines may include self-directed study time which we would encourage our students to undertake on a weekly basis to target and embed their individual gaps in knowledge or skill. Effective learning strategies which students could use during their self- directed study time can be seen on our website.

Homework Club

Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday-Thursday where they can complete work in a quiet environment with staff on hand to support them.

Personal Development

Over the next few weeks as part of our work on developing character we will be focusing on being tolerant. If students are tolerant of others, they will accept other students’ differences, develop a healthy respect for one another and learn to live in a rich and diverse community. We also want all students to feel that this is their school and they belong here.

Please access this link for key information on being tolerant and tips for developing this aspect of your child’s character.

Message from the Headteacher

From Monday 17th May the exam season for our Year 11 begins fully. After a tumultuous two years, the students have prepared themselves well and we wish them all the very best of luck over the coming few weeks. Although this is a stressful time, it should also be a memorable time for the students as they count down their final few weeks of high school. As a staff, we are looking forward to the leavers’ events we have planned for the year group. We are grateful that these events can be held this year; the details of these events have been sent separately to Year 11 parents along with the arrangements for Study Leave, which commences on Tuesday 7th June. From all of us here at Freddie’s – Good Luck Year 11!

Mr Davies.
