How we learn

Here at Freddie’s, we focus on six types of homework to help our students broaden, consolidate and extend their learning. Below is an explanation of why we try to set Practice it’  homework or encourage our KS4 students to self-direct their study time at home:

Evening of Dance

This years Evening of Dance is fast approaching! Tickets are now on sale, (2 per dancer). Take a look at some of last year’s highlights!

Homework and Self-directed study

Below are some of our study skills strategies which we encourage students to use as a method of helping them to retain information in the long-term memory.  Actively doing something with the information that they have been taught is a really useful way of learning and remembering:

Microsoft Office

Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.

Satchel:One

You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.

GCSEPod

GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.

Homework Club

Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday-Thursday in the Library (apart from Monday week B) where support and IT equipment is is available.

Attendance

This week we won the National School Attendance Award. We are now in the top 25% of similar FFT secondary schools in England.

Thank you for your continued support with attendance.

Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had a number of positive events taking place in school over the course of the last week. As you will be aware, last Friday we celebrated our 60th Anniversary with a fabulous Fancy Dress Day and a special themed assembly. Staff and students wholeheartedly got involved and a lot of great memories were made. We have updated our gallery with even more pictures from the day.  A link to this can be found at the end of this message.

This week our school show The Addams Family is running and it is fabulous! I will also take this opportunity to promote the Evening of Dance which will be taking place in the last week of term. Nearly 250 students will have been involved in both of these events, either performing or supporting backstage, which is just superb.

And finally, I’d like to wish all of Year 10 the very best of luck as they embark on their work experience placements next week. Hopefully they will learn a lot about themselves during the course of the week.

Thank-you for your continued support.

Mr Davies.
