For Parents & Carers

Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents & Carers,

As we end another successful school year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support, encouragement, and partnership throughout the year.

Our final week of term has been filled with many enjoyable activities and memorable experiences for our students. From celebration events and performances to special trips and sporting activities, it has been wonderful to see our students engaging so enthusiastically and demonstrating the positive values that make our school community so special. The smiles, achievements, and friendships on display throughout the week have provided a fitting end to a busy and rewarding year.

I would also like to thank our dedicated staff for their hard work and commitment in providing such a wide range of opportunities for our students, and to congratulate the students themselves for their efforts and accomplishments this year. They should be very proud of all they have achieved.

As the summer break begins, I hope that all of our families have the chance to relax, spend quality time together, and enjoy a well-deserved rest. Whether you are travelling, enjoying activities closer to home, or simply taking time to recharge, I wish you a happy, safe, and enjoyable summer.

We look forward to welcoming our students back refreshed and ready for another exciting year ahead.

With best wishes,

Mr Davies.

Things to celebrate

  • Last weekend, Year 9 students successfully completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition. A great effort in extreme conditions.

  • On Monday our Brass Band went to London to play outside the Houses of Parliament. This was a huge honour and an incredible experience for all involved.

  • On Tuesday we hosted our annual prize giving event. This is always a superb opportunity to really celebrate the achievements of our students across all year groups.

  • On Thursday we held our first ‘Freddie’s Fest’.  This event amalgamated our annual Sports Day with a festival to celebrate all things Freddie’s and to bring our school community together. A great day was had by all.

  • Summer Hampers have been distributed to families in need during the last week of term. A huge thank you to everyone who donated and helped to pack and deliver the hampers.

  • Today we held our year group celebration assemblies. Congratulations to all our prize winners!

It has been an amazing final week of sport at Freddies!

  • Sports Day 2026

Sports Day took place on Thursday and involved every student in the school. Despite the hot conditions, students performed brilliantly and represented their team colours with pride, commitment and determination throughout the day. After a closely fought competition, the top three teams were separated by just seven points. Finishing in third place was Team Blue, followed by Team Red in second place. Taking the overall title and winning by just five points was Team Black. Points were earned across both the athletics events and the Kwik Cricket team competitions. Well done to everyone who took part and a huge thank you from Team PE for making the day such a success.

  • Trampoline Championship Finals

Last weekend, Phoebe Harris in Year 8 competed at the English Trampoline National Championship Finals in the Female 13–14 Bronze category. Only 16 girls from across England qualified for the finals, making this a tremendous achievement. Phoebe finished in an outstanding 10th place at her first ever appearance at this level of competition. Everyone at Freddie’s is incredibly proud of her achievement and we look forward to seeing what she accomplishes in the future. Well done, Phoebe!

  • Duke of Edinburgh expedition

A record number of 81 Year 9 students successfully completed their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition at Rivington last weekend. The conditions were extremely hot and challenging for hiking, but every student showed resilience, teamwork and determination to complete the expedition successfully. This is a fantastic achievement and one that all involved should be extremely proud of.

  • Manchester United Signing

As promised, here is a picture of Kate Fletcher in Year 7 after signing for Manchester United. Everyone at Freddie’s is immensely proud of Kate's achievement and we look forward to hearing all about her experiences and successes next season. Kate is an excellent example of what can be achieved through dedication, hard work and a passion for sport.

Congratulations to all of our students on a fantastic year of sporting achievement, participation and success. Have a wonderful summer break, and we look forward to seeing what you can achieve next year!

  • Footwear Reminder

Reminder about the football boots policy we have at Freddie's and what students can and can’t wear when participating in sport on the 3G surface. We continue to do our best to ensure we maintain the quality of the playing surface for many years to come so all students can benefit from using our top-class facility. Thanks for your support and should you have any questions please contact Mr Gregory.

We are always excited to learn of any sporting successes outside of school so we can celebrate the student’s achievements. Please email Mr Gregory with any information so we can share with everyone on Freddie’s Focus gregoryi@flhs.wigan.sch.uk

School Reminders

  • End of School Year

School is now closed for the summer holidays. Please read the information that has be sent out regarding the summer holidays, and your child’s return to school in September.

  • Self-Directed Study Hub Updates

As summer homework begins to be distributed, The Study Hub will be an invaluable resource for Year 10 students. It brings together revision materials, knowledge organisers, practice activities, past papers, and exam-style questions in one easy to access location, helping students complete their work with confidence and independence. Summer homework is an important opportunity to consolidate learning from Year 10 and prepare for the challenges of Year 11. By regularly using The Study Hub alongside their homework, students can revisit key topics, strengthen their understanding, and develop the study habits that will support success in their GCSE courses. We encourage all students to make full use of the platform throughout the summer and start building strong foundations for next year.

This is additional to the other Wigan PADLET which serves as a useful gateway to all the services that support children in the Wigan area. Both PADLETS are regularly updated so it is worthwhile frequently checking-in for current information and updates.

What we do at Freddie's and why we do it

This year was the launch of our Freddie’s Fest which combined our annual Sports Day with a festival of fun, music and celebration.

Homework and Independent Learning

Over the summer holidays we encourage all students to read.  Below is a reasing list to all recommended reading:

Our Year 10 students (soon to be Year 11) will be set Summer homework to complete.  This is to ensure a smoothe return and to get our Year 11 students into the study habits required in Year 11.

Applications that we use for learning

The following applications are used by our students during their time at FLHS to aid their learning. You can learn more about them below.

Microsoft Office

Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.

Satchel:One

Satchel:One is the school online learning platform for students and is the parental portal for all information related to your child’s overall progress within school. You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.

GCSEPod

GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.

Attendance

We want to do all we can to support your child to be in school every day and ask that you support this important message from home, encouraging your child to avoid missing curriculum content through absence.  Here is a breakdown of the absences for the following attendance percentages:

Thank you for your continued support with attendance.
