Message from the Headteacher
Dear Parents & Carers,
It has been an absolute privilege this week to welcome back to school Jordan James Bridge, an internationally acclaimed choreographer and dancer whose career in dance began right here at Freddie’s. Jordan left us in 2009 and since then has gone on to achieve great things in the professional dance world. On the day of his visit, Jordan led workshops with some of our current students and in his honour, we have named the dance studio after him. I know it was an incredibly proud moment for Jordan to return to his old school and officially open the dance studio in his name. I hope that many parents and students get chance to see the report that will feature on Granada news about his visit to school.
Jordan’s success is testimony to the power of the Arts which we go to such great lengths to champion and preserve in our school. Jordan kindly agreed to be our guest speaker at the Prize Giving Evening too, and listening to his story, he serves as an inspiration to all of our students in showcasing what dedication, passion, hard work and sheer determination can lead to. In what has been a very special week in school for celebrating the success of all our students, past and present, a huge well done to all our prize winners on Tuesday’s Prize Giving Evening and to the many students who received awards during our final assemblies. This has been another successful year for the school.
I’d like to thank the majority of parents for your continued support and wish all of our families a pleasant summer. We look forward to welcoming back all of our students in September but for now – school’s out. To all of our students – take care and stay safe.
Thank-you for your continued support.
Mr Davies

Things to celebrate

- Last week our Brass Band went on a European Tour. This was an incredible opportunity for all involved. They performed in four countries – Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and France.
- Our Duke of Edinburgh students completed a successful expedition.
- On Tuesday we celebrated the success of a huge number of our students who received an award at our Prize Giving event. We were also honoured to have ex-student; Jordan Bridge speak at our event. Jordan is now a hugely successful dance choreographer who also opened our new Dance Studio earlier in the day on Tuesday.
- On Wednesday it was our annual Sports Day. This is always a superb day whereby we can celebrate the huge amount of sporting talent in school.
- Thursday was our trips and activities day. This is always a lovely day and one which celebrates the achievements of our students at the end of the academic year.
- Thank you to everyone who contributed to our summer hampers.

What we do at Freddie's and why we do it
Supporting our students with reading:
At Freddie’s we place great value on reading. We have a reading curriculum in place to support every child to access reading materials in all of their subjects. All classrooms display ‘Read like a….’ posters which contain subject specific tips on how to access reading materials. We also use a variety of strategies to guide students through specific texts (see below).
In September we are launching our ‘Powerful Words’ booklets for Years 7,8 and 9. This is to support vocabulary development and our reading curriculum. Students will be expected to bring their ‘Powerful Words’ booklets to school with them every day as part of their essential equipment. They will be given these booklets during the first day back and we will explain to them why they have been introduced and how valuable they will be to their learning and progress.

Homework and Independent Learning
Please encourage your child to read over Summer. Prioritising 15-20 minutes a day to read can have a very powerful impact on your child’s reading ability.
Applications that we use for learning
The following applications are used by our students during their time at FLHS to aid their learning. You can learn more about them below.
Microsoft Office
Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.
Satchel:One
Satchel:One is the school online learning platform for students and is the parental portal for all information related to your child’s overall progress within school. You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.
GCSEPod
GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.
Homework Club
Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday to Thursday where they can complete work in a quiet environment with staff on hand to support them, and computers for online quizzes and research.
Attendance
We want to do all we can to support your child to be in school every day and ask that you support this important message from home, encouraging your child to avoid missing curriculum content through absence. Here is a breakdown of the absences for the following attendance percentages:
Thank you for your continued support with attendance.
