What we do at Freddie's and why we do it

In lessons and in assemblies here at Freddie’s, we use something called ‘SLANT’ as a way of ensuring that we get full attention from your childWe don’t want any students to miss out on instructions or key pieces of informationEstablishing full attention and avoiding distractions are vital in supporting learning. Below is an image that we present in all classrooms so that we can explicitly share what each part of SLANT meansWe also regularly remind our students why SLANT matters and why it is there to support their learning and success at Freddie’s.

Homework and Self-directed study

At FLHS, homework is viewed as a valuable part of a student’s learning. Effective homework can improve learning and help our students to develop lifelong skills. Our aim is for homework to be structured, meaningful and coherent for all concerned. Homework at FLHS should broaden, consolidate, extend or enhance the learning.

The types of homework we will set and why

At FLHS, we endeavour to use evidence-informed practice and research in order to provide the most effective types of homework tasks to enhance our students’ learning experience. There are six types of homework that your child may be setThese are:

  • Read it
  • Spell it
  • Practice it
  • Retrieve it
  • Apply it
  • Pod it

For further information on the types of homework that we set and why, please see our website.

Microsoft Office

Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.

Satchel:One

You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.

GCSEPod

GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.

Homework Club

Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday-Thursday in the Library (apart from Monday week B) where support and IT equipment is is available.

Attendance

We want to do all we can to support your child to be in school every day and ask that you support this important message from home, encouraging your child to avoid missing curriculum content through absence.  Here is a breakdown of the absences for the following attendance percentages:

Thank you for your continued support with attendance.

Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

Your children have made a positive start to the new term. I’d like to thank parents for your continued support in ensuring that standard of uniform has remained high for the majority of our students.

I’d like to make parents aware that Freddie’s has recently been nominated for the prestigious Northern Cultural Education Award This award aims to shine a light on best practice, innovation and activism in the field of creative and cultural education, wherever it is happening in schools across the North of England. The Awards Ceremony itself will take place on Friday 24th May 2024 at The Edge Arena in Wigan. This nomination recognises the significant contribution that the Arts continues to make at our school.

On another positive note, over the Easter Holiday I received an email from the manager of the coach company that took 150 Freddie’s students on the Spain Disney Trip. At a time when so many young people can be misrepresented and when the actions of a minority reflect negatively on the majority, it is nice to share a message of this nature:

As the manager of G-Line Holidays, I just wanted to drop you a few words that, if possible, I would like shared with your staff, pupils, and parents please.

Upon their return home, the drivers undertaking this tour have all reported that this year’s group was very possibly THE BEST group of children that they have ever carried.

I drove one of the coaches myself, and I can ratify the other drivers’ views and comment that this year’s students listened to and always followed instructions, they were well-mannered, well behaved, respectful and extremely courteous at all times. In addition, the coaches were kept impeccably clean, which is not commonplace when covering such distances.

The same must be said of the staff, who clearly work tirelessly and strive to deliver a successful tour for the children. All the coach crews stated the staff on each coach this year were informative, approachable, and worked with the drivers at all times. It invoked a fantastic ‘team spirit’ which I sincerely hope is echoed by your team of staff.

In summary, I wanted to say it was an absolute pleasure to provide the transport of your students to through France to Spain last week, and I wanted to stress that my team of staff all stated that each pupil is a credit to their parents, and all travelling are a credit to Fred Longworth High School.
