Fred Longworth High School has been part of the lives of thousands of students, creating memories, friendships and experiences that stay with them long after they leave.
Here, our alumni share advice on their time at Fred Longworth.
Join in with an extracurricular activity you enjoy – whether that is sports, science or musicals – because these interests are just as important as your subjects.
Listen to your teachers, they genuinely want you to do the best you can. Be yourself and don’t try to be different to fit in. There will always be someone who gets you and who likes you for you.
School may seem hard it may seem like they have ‘daft’ rules but school will be great if you let it be great, enjoy it while you can, live your childhood, the more you put in the more you will get out of it.
Put as much effort as you can into your cofe subjects – Maths, English, Science – you really will need them! Enjoy your young life as much as you can while you have it, yes exams are hard, but adult responsibilities do not compare. And don’t worry if you’re a little different from your peers, one day you’ll find your calling and your uniqueness will be your super power. Never let anyone dampen your glow.
Dream big! Freddies students have the opportunities, thanks to facilities and passionate staff, to aim incredibly high in their chosen fields.
Don’t be in a rush to leave school – before you know it you’ll be missing it.
My advice to current students is to make the most of every opportunity, even if it feels outside your comfort zone. Get involved in clubs, sports, performances or volunteering because you never know where these experiences might lead or the confidence, they can help you build. Work hard, ask for help when you need it, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes, as they’re often where the greatest learning happens. Most importantly, appreciate the friendships you make and the support of your teachers. School goes by much faster than you think, and the memories and relationships you build will stay with you long after you’ve left.
Make the very most of your time at Freddie’s – try and find some curiosity for every subject and every lesson, even the ones that you find hard, it all shapes who you are for your whole life after school, so soak it in while you can!
Don’t feel like you need to know exactly what you want to do in life during high school. I left high have no idea what job I wanted. I did the A levels I enjoyed and then figured it out in college. Also enjoy high school. It genuinely is the fastest five years of your life.
Embrace your time at secondary school. You have the ability to shape whatever path you wish to go down. You learn so much about who you are and you make friends for life. Your teachers are also always there to help you and guide you, so make use of them!
Treasure your time at Freddies. You may not realise but this is the start of the rest of your lives and you will look back fondly at your time and realise how fantastic this school is and think warmly of your friends and teachers, thanking them for who you are as an adult and how Freddies sets you up for not only a good career but your path through life.
Take an opportunity if it is given to you no matter what you think, it may not directly benefit you now but you never know when that lesson, experience or course will put you ahead of another person in a career chance.
Be open minded about what you want to do in the future, you may be good at particular subjects but your career path may not involve those. Enjoy your time, be respectful, be kind and remember that the harder you work in school the more options you have going into college and university, or even apprenticeships.
Revise revise revise!!
Get into a good routine of being disciplined early because it will really help you in later education. Don’t worry if your friends fall out with you!! Might feel like the end of the world but you make best friends later in life when you know what you need and want from friendships.
