Thom Rylance, lead singer, songwriter and founder of the chart-topping indie band The Lottery Winners is a former student at Fred Longworth High School. Thom has enjoyed remarkable success in the music industry, helping to lead the Leigh-based band to multiple Top 40 albums, including the UK Number One album Anxiety Replacement Therapy in 2023.

Thom has spoken openly about the challenges he faced during his school years, including living with what was then undiagnosed ADHD. He has described struggling to fit into the traditional school environment and has reflected honestly on the difficulties he experienced as a young person.

Importantly, Thom has also acknowledged the positive impact that individual teachers had on his life. In interviews, he has credited his music teacher at Fred Longworth High School with encouraging his musical talent and believing in him at a time when he was finding school particularly challenging. He has recalled how the support and encouragement he received helped him recognise his creative abilities and pursue his passion for music.

Thom’s story is a powerful reminder that success can come in many forms and that resilience, creativity and determination can help overcome obstacles. At Fred Longworth High School, we are delighted to see a former student achieving such great success while continuing to inspire others through his music and his openness about mental health and ADHD. We wish Thom and The Lottery Winners every continued success in the future.

In this video Thom talks about his memories of his time at Fred Longworth High School.
