Freddie's Focus

For Parents & Carers

Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers,

As you are now hopefully aware, we will be bringing in the summer uniform from Monday 3rd June. I sincerely hope that the weather is good enough to warrant this! If you missed our communications, parents need to be aware of the following.

  • Girls will be able to wear plain black (no bows) knee length socks instead of the usual tights. If girls choose to wear knee length socks, they are expected to wear their dresses at an appropriate length.
  • Students should continue to wear their blazers, shirt and ties as normal; however, should the weather become too hot, we will take a common-sense approach and we will not expect students to wear blazers. We will communicate this in the event of it happening.
  • This year, at the request of students, we have made the decision to introduce black, tailored shorts as part of our summer uniform. These are unisex and are available from our suppliers. Sports shorts, cargo shorts or casual shorts are not allowed. Students will be allowed to wear the tailored shorts for school but must wear shoes, and smart black socks with the shorts (further information about the uniform changes can be found at the bottom of this letter).

This week, I have had the pleasure of speaking with the Student Council representatives from each year group. The students involved have been articulate and forthright in bringing forward their opinions and suggestions on how we can improve the school. They have also given us valuable insight into the student experience so that we can make improvements I am very grateful for their input and contributions.  Mrs Turner has also this week spoken to Year 10 students regarding student leadership, and we are now starting to receive applications for Head Boy / Head Girl / Head Person. We will appoint next half term.

For reference for parents of Year 11, I have attached the letter which outlines the final arrangements for your children after half term and the alternative timetable they will be following. This was originally circulated earlier in the month (see below).

At the time of writing this, members of our Arts Team will be enroute to the prestigious Northern Cultural Education Awards. Best of luck to the team. Just their nomination for this award recognises the unique and significant contribution that the Arts make to our school community, but of course – we do hope they win! Keep an eye on our social media for the result.

Wishing all families an enjoyable bank holiday. We look forward to welcoming the students back on Monday 3rd June.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mr Davies.

What we do at Freddie's and why we do it

Our ‘BEST Awards’ are awarded to four students in every Form class who have demonstrated great strength of character over the past Term. It is a way of us letting our students know how proud we are of them and how valued they are for the role that they play at Freddie’s.

The ‘BEST Awards’ take place three times a Year. The students who are chosen will have demonstrated one or more of our character traits below. Every winner receives 5 reward points and a parent text will be sent home on the last day of term.

Homework and Independent Learning

Introducing O.S.C.A.R

Organisation, Selection, Creativity, Association, Repetition

The OSCAR model is used to support our students with independent learning at homeThe ’S’ stands for selectionWe want to encourage all students to take responsibility for their learning at home and to check Satchel One every night.

Students must then select which pieces of homework/revision they are going to focus on that nightAt times they may need to prioritiseThis can be done by checking due dates and also by considering which pieces of work that they may find more challengingIt is always tempting to leave the most challenging until last, but we would encourage students not to do thisThe work which they find most challenging may require longer time spent on it and may also help them to find it less challenging if they spend quality time on it.

Applications that we use for learning

The following applications are used by our students during their time at FLHS to aid their learning. You can learn more about them below.

Microsoft Office

Did you know that your child can access Microsoft Office at home for free? As a student at Fred Longworth High School, your child is allowed to download a fully working free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use on their computer, smartphone and tablet whilst they are a student at our school. Click on the button below to learn more.

Satchel:One

Satchel:One is the school online learning platform for students and is the parental portal for all information related to your child’s overall progress within school. You can keep track of your child’s homework using Satchel:One. It is advisable to remind your child to get into the habit of checking their homework on Satchel:One regularly. Relying upon notifications is not the right approach and we advise students to turn off notifications so that they are not disturbed by them.

GCSEPod

GCSEPod is an online study platform and is the perfect resource to help your child learn, retain and recall all the information they need to achieve their GCSE goals. GCSEPod provides 3-5 minute bursts of audio-visual, teacher written learning which can help to reinforce and consolidate key GCSE topics covered in lessons. Experts read and explain everything clearly including all the right facts, quotes, keywords, dates and diagrams on screen. GCSEPod is only available to students in Year 10 and Year 11.

Homework Club

Please remind your child that homework club is available to all students Monday-Thursday in the Library (apart from Monday week B) where support and IT equipment is is available.
